Best neighborhood nicknames
Have to help cover the Bodega while we are understaffed so my posts this week will be short
Was listening to the new Common and Kanye joint "Southside" and had a brain fart.
I thoroughly believe in the mythology of Hip-Hop. A big part of any mythology are places.
We have no shortage of mythical locations. Here are the best names (IMHO) in no particular order. (I may have done this before - I am getting old)
- The Wild Hundreds (my fav)
- Boogie Down Bronx
- Money Earnin' Mount Vernon
- Money Savin' New Haven
- Cop Killa Queens
- The Yay Area
- The Bouley Fran Lou
- Chocolate City
- The Big Easy
- The D
- Do or Die Bed Stuy
- Iraq (Lefrak City, Queens - thanks NORE)
- QBC
- The LBC
- Southside (Jamaica, Queens and Chicago)
- The Yard
I am sure there are plenty of ill names from around the world I'm missing.
Please add on

- Linden Blvd (ATCQ)
- Albee Sq. Mall (Biz Markie)
- Fatburger (Beastie Boys)
- re: #3, more specifically: the 7-7 Hillside (home address of the legendary Pete Rock Basement)
- 5th Ward (Geto Boys)
- 9th Ward & Calliope projects (Juvie/Cash Money)
- 118th street (really 18th Street, East Orange NJ) (Naughty By Nature)
Those first 3 were all places I was DUMB excited to see when I first moved to the US and encountered them in person even though they were nothing special in real life. They had just taken on a mythic quality cos they were mentioned in records I loved!

I realized I misread the point of this post after I left my last comments but as for Canada I only pretty much only know about Toronto aka the T.dot (although I know Vancouver in BC is called Van City) and I haven't even lived there in 15 years now.
There's a bunch of hoods but only a few have real nicknames as far as I'm aware (current residents correct me if I'm wrong):
Flemingdon Park (aka Flemo) - where my family lived when we first moved to Toronto.
Lawrence Heights (aka the Jungle)
Malvern (supposedly aka the Vern)
Other infamous hoods: Jane-Finch, Rexdale and Regent Park. There are others I'm sure but those are pretty much the most notorious ones and I know the whole of Scarborough (one of the boroughs in Toronto where my parents' home is) is kind of live now.
